Public Opening – Sonoran Quipu
at Tohono O’odham Community College
September 14, 2023
5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Join us to celebrate an extension of Cecilia Vicuña’s Sonoran Quipu at the Tohono O’odham Community College (TOCC) with newly commissioned quipu sculptures created by artists Heidi Blaine, Maria Celis, Amber Ortega, and Alaina Pierce.
Blaine, Celis, Ortega, and Pierce worked closely with Vicuña to support the production of her installation at MOCA as Sonoran Quipu Fellows. This fall, the artists expand the Sonoran Quipu to TOCC, continuing the life of the quipu as an entity that spans time and space, held together by relationships, conversations, and creation. The artists’ new quipu sculptures, like Vicuna’s, are suspended from above and composed of found plant material and cast-offs, carrying the spirit of the quipu with the knowledge imparted by Vicuña, through each artist’s individual artistic touch. The sculptures will be on view at TOCC through December, 2023.
This event will take place at the Tohono O’odham Community College (TOCC) located at Milepost 125.5, AZ-86, Sells, AZ 85634, look for the TOCC campus billboard and marquee. Please note that TOCC is about a one-hour drive from Tucson.
Presented in partnership with Tohono O’odham Community College.
