To ensure the safety of our community amid the COVID-19 pandemic, MOCA Tucson is partnering with The Children’s Museum and the Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures to bring you a week-long Mini-Installation Summer Camp, an online curriculum designed to bring a maker lab right to your home. We will provide each camper with a maker kit including a variety of materials to help campers create miniature real and imagined spaces. We will provide Zoom check-ins, video tutorials, and templates to guide campers through the process.

During this unprecedented time, we recognize the challenges many families face, from loss of income to home-schooling and self-isolation. This camp offers opportunities for campers to share their experiences during this time while also creating an opening to imagine worlds outside of our environments during isolation. We invite you to dream up what possible futures may await us on the other side of this pandemic.

During this play-based camp youth will learn about installation art, receive a kit with the materials needed to create their mini-installations, and learn new skills as they move through the process. Through video tutorials and live Zoom meetings, museum staff will work with campers both as a group and one-on-one to work through their ideas and troubleshoot creative ways to help their imagined spaces become real.

This camp focuses on reuse and we encourage campers to look around their homes and in the recycling bin to collect items they can use to create. This element of camp helps campers develop their problem-solving skills, while also stressing that they don’t need access to expensive art supplies to make art.

There will also be a showcase event once it is safe to reopen.

How does it work?

Don’t worry, your child will not be required to sit in front of the computer all day during camp. First, we will do a contactless drop off with a kit of art supplies at your home. This will include everything campers need to create a successful mini-installation. The camp schedule will then look like this:

M/W/F: All camper Zoom check-in to meet each other and share progress. This should last no longer than 1 hour and youth will connect only with their age group (5 and under, 6-8, 9-12, 13-18).

T/TH: We will have open Zoom lounges. Camper will not be required to check-in but can drop-in if they have questions, need guidance, or just want to say hello.

Throughout the week we will be sending links to video tutorials and templates covering different aspects of the project. Campers can watch and engage at their own pace.
